Cabbage Rolls in the crock pot. This recipe does take about 30 minutes prep time, but well worth it! You will need the following:
1 boil in bag instant rice
1 lb hamburger
1 diced onion
Worcestershire sauce
2 t Garlic powder
2 T Italian seasoning
1 extra large can tomato sauce
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup milk
1 egg
Sour cream (if wanted to top off cabbage rolls when the are fully cooked)
While the rice is boiling, peel off about 10 good sized cabbage leafs, rinse and place on a drying towel.
Brown the onions and hamburger......then add about 1/8 cup worcestershire sauce, 2 teaspoons garlic powder and 2 tablespoons italian seasoning. Remove from heat and let cool some.
Mix the 1/2 cup packed brown sugar into the extra large can of tomatoe sauce..
Whisk the egg into the 1/2 cup milk
When the rice is ready, rinse the bag under cold water, then toss in a bowl with the meat mixture and the egg/milk mixture....
Spoon mixture onto the cabbage rolls, fold in the sides and roll the leaf.....
Stack them in the crock pot seam side down. I always use these crock pot liners, they make clean up "a breeze" !
Pour the tomato sauce/brown sugar over the cabbage rolls, set the crock pot to high and walk away for 4 hours....or 6 hours on low....
Here's how it all looked after 4 hours........
And served on a plate. I forgot to top with the sour cream. Totally forgot about it. But they were delicious without it. Katie came over and called this recipe a keeper!!

We called these pig in a blanket when I was a kid. Probably the wrong name for the dish. I'm so glad to find it here on your site, as I didn't really know how to make it. Love your site - found you on Sew Many Ways.
ReplyDeleteIn Russian it is called "golubtsy" ))))) I like it!

Clarification - did you mean to say "set the crock pot" instead of "set the microwave?" I will definitely try this recipe. Thanks for sharing. Judy C
ReplyDeleteJudy C....thanks for alerting me to the typo ! It should read correctly now.
