The Making Of A Peeps Sunflower Cake

Stephanie is a lover of Peeps.  She loves them all, the chicks, the rabbits, the pumpkins at Halloween and the hearts on Valentine's Day.  Her birthday has arrived and since the Peeps were still plentiful at the grocery store, I made her the sunflower peeps chocolate cake that I found online at Taste of Home.  I think it turned out magnificently!  For the chocolate cake and the icing, I used the recipe on the back of the Hershey's Cocoa can......
Stephanie's favorite cake is Red Velvet so she got that for her birthday too.  Plus we were going to Grandma and Grandpa T's for Dylan's party and there were going to be many other desserts there too, so for this cake I went with just one 9" round layer.....

The "seeds" of the sunflower were created using two different sizes of chocolate chips.....
Of course the sunflower petals are peeps.  I was having some trouble getting the peeps to stay in place around the rim of the cake...........
So I used some yellow toothpicks to keep those chick-a-dees in place.  I wish I could have also figured out a way to connect the 4 sections of peeps together so there would not be spaces..........

It did turn out really well for my first attempt!
99% of the time I hate the white Formica counter tops that came with my kitchen.  But there is that 1% of the time when they come in real handy to showcase something colorful and make a very pretty picture.......  Scroll to the bottom to see who I have linked to this week.

  10. I love making this cake, and you can change it up with all the different color peeps & different holidays. I made a strawberry cake with cream cheese frosting and pink bunny peeps with sprinkles for seeds. It turned out cute too. Another bonus, the peeps make it easy to cut even portions. Great job!
